□Nielson Norman Group: Minimize Cognitive Load to Maximize Usability Here you can find more information about cognitive load: Focus on consistency: Buttons and Links should have a consistent style across the page.Focus on one action per page: Don’t promote too many different things on one page.Hick’s law states that more options = more difficult decisions. Remove unnecessary fields from your forms.Users need to be in control of actions, always. Remove automated objects like automated sliders (don’t get me started), auto-playing videos, flashy Text, auto-playing audio…īasically, anything that is out of the user’s control should be eliminated.(And yes, cognitive load theory is where the famous 7+/- 2 rule comes from.) Now that’s out of the way - where are my quick wins now? They are easily overwhelmed by videos that play on their own (who wouldn’t be?) Well, that is hard to say in general (Depends on your target group)Įspecially younger or older audiences have limited working memory capacities. Our brain can only process limited amounts of information at the same time.
